Robert Montgomery "Bobby" Knight (October 25, 1940 – November 1, 2023) was an American men's college basketballcoach. Nicknamed "the General", he

"If [Bobby Knight] is provoked, he is going to challenge it and the a lot of times the best thing to do is walk away. But with him, he likes to see a resolution to the situation,"says former Ohio State teammate John Havlicek on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series.

Controversial and colorful, combustible and combative, Bobby Knight is one of the most successful coaches in college basketball history.

Indiana coach Bobby Knight throws a chair across the floor during Indiana's 72-63 loss to Purdue on Feb. 23, 1985.
Before becoming Texas Tech's coach in 2001, the man in the red sweater guided Indiana to three national championships - in 1976, 1981 and 1987. In 2003, Knight became the fourth Division I coach to win 800 games in his quest to break Dean Smith's all-time record of 879. Knight also coached the U.S. to gold medals at the 1984 Olympics and the 1979 Pan-American Games.

But Bobby's no knight in shining armor. He's known as much for his tirades against players, referees and reporters as for his coaching brilliance. He's known to be rude, defiant and hostile.
