Mamie Eisenhower never earned a paycheck for working outside the home, but she had a full-time job for most of her life. “Ike was my career,” she declared. She embraced her role as military wife and devoted much of her energy to helping her husband by making their many residences feel like home. In 1953, she took on a new responsibility for which she was fully prepared -- First Lady of the United States. She defined that role in a way that reflected her own preferences and priorities as well as a good deal of contemporary thinking about gender roles in the 1950s.

Mary Geneva Doud Eisenhower (November 14, 1896 – November 1, 1979) was the first lady of the United States from 1953 to 1961 as the wife of the 34th president of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower.
As first lady, Eisenhower managed the expenses and schedules of the White House. She closely managed the staff, the White House budgeting throughout her tenure.
Eisenhower was popular as first lady, and was regarded as a fashion icon. She was known her stylish hair bangs and wearing the color pink.

Mamie Eisenhower was born on November 14, 1896 in Boone, Iowa. Her father, John Sheldon Doud, owned and managed a meat packing plant. His business in Boone was so successful that he was able to retire at age thirty-six. He decided to relocate his family to Denver, Colorado. The affluent Doud family spent the winters in San Antonio, Texas.
The Doud family was a household of four girls. Mamie’s mother was Elivera Carlson Doud. The family lived in a large and comfortable house on Lafayette Street in Denver. The Doud daughters were raised with domestic help and had many opportunities in life. Mamie, like many young women of her social background, attended a finishing school. Her education prepared her for a desirable marriage and then as a social housewife who enhanced her husband’s chosen career.
