Arthur Hamilton Stern (born October 22, 1926),[2][3] known professionally as Arthur Hamilton, is an American songwriter.[4] He is best known for the song "Cry Me a River", first published in 1953 and recorded by Julie London and numerous other artists.
Biography
Arthur "Art" Stern was born in Seattle, Washington, the son of songwriter and comedian Jacob Abraham "Jack" Stern (1896–1985) and Grace Hamilton Stern née Leet (1883–1953).[1][5] He moved as an infant with his family to Hollywood, California.[3] He learned piano as a child, and also studied music theory and counterpoint.[6]
He later began using the name Arthur Hamilton.[3] In 1949 he wrote an early live television musical for KTTV in Los Angeles, California. The first time I encountered Arthur Hamilton, I was attending a National Academy of Songwriters meeting in Hollywood. I was taking my junior year at USC and was trying to fill any spare time with activities that might enlighten me to the business. Arthur was presiding over a songwriting gathering, probably about this size, and I was struck with the masterful way that he was able to engage the audience and the respect he had for the guests he introduced. I¹ve always used Arthur as my role model in my public service and therefore, it is fitting, if not ironic that I am introducing him now. Arthur came from a musical family. His father was a respected publisher and songwriter. Early on, he had the foresight to align himself with talented artists, however serendipitously those relationships may have occurred. Arthur Campbell Hamilton, Lord Hamilton, PC (born Glasgow, 10 June 1942), is a Scottish judge and served as Lord Justice General and Lord President of the Court of Session from November 2005 until 8 June 2012, succeeding Lord Cullen.[1] Arthur Campbell Hamilton was born in Glasgow and attended Glasgow High School, which was then a state grammar school. He studied at the University of Glasgow, Worcester College, Oxford and Edinburgh University, where he gained an LLB in 1967. In June 2003, he was elected an Honorary Fellow of Worcester College, Oxford. Hamilton was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1968 and appointed Queen's Counsel (QC) in 1982. He was an Advocate Depute, a Scottish prosecutor, from 1982 until 1985, Chairman of the Medical Appeals Tribunals from 1988 to 1992 and President of the Pensions Appeal Tribunal in Scotland from 1992 to 1995.
