Television talk show host, game show superstar, singer, author, actor, red carpet bon vivant. You name it, he’s done it. The word “icon” seems to have been created for Regis Philbin.
Born on August 25, 1931, Regis, a native New Yorker, graduated from his beloved University of Notre Dame in 1953 with a degree in sociology. After serving in the Navy, he began a standard apprenticeship in television: page, stagehand, sports newswriter, and substitute anchor. Regis first tasted fame on ABC’s The Joey Bishop Show from 1967 to 1969 and amply proved he could handle the demands of live television; on opening night, actress Debbie Reynolds tackled Regis to the ground while demonstrating how to help someone on fire. But the show also had its upside, introducing him to Bishop’s assistant, Joy. They married in 1970.

Regis Francis Xavier Philbin[1][2] (; August 25, 1931 – July 24, 2020) was an American media personality, actor and singer, known for hosting talk and game shows since the 1960s.[3] Sometimes called (alternatively attributed to James Brown) "the hardest working man in show business",[4][5] he held the world record for the most time spent in front of a television camera.[6] He was most widely known for Live! with Regis and Kelly (previously Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee),[7]Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,[7]Million Dollar Password,[8] and for hosting the first season of America's Got Talent.[9]

Regis Francis Xavier Philbin was born on August 25, 1931, in New York City. Part of an Irish Catholic family, Regis Philbin was the eldest son of Frank and Florence Philbin, and grew up in the Bronx. He was named after his father's alma mater, Regis High School, a Jesuit boys school in Manhattan.
After graduating from Notre Dame in 1953, Philbin served in the U.S. Navy. Following his discharge from the military, he began his television career with several entry-level jobs in Hollywood, including a post as a film-delivery man at KCOP-TV in Los Angeles, California.
