Menuhin’s Path to Embracing Yoga

Menuhin exhibited a strong idealism and open-mindedness about the world, both during his childhood and later as a yoga practitioner. His early family life played an important role in laying the foundation for this worldview, while his inherent idealism and culturally inclusive beliefs provided the emotional and spiritual groundwork for his embrace of yoga as an adult. When viewing the early influences and musical career that formed the foundation for Menuhin’s remarkably creative and spiritual life, it is really no surprise that he felt so drawn to the practice and discipline of yoga as an adult.

Menuhin was born in New York City on April 22, 1916. His parents, Moshe (“Aba”) and Marutha (“Imma”) Menuhin had arrived in America as part of the wave of Russian Jewish immigration in the early twentieth century. His mother proudly named him Yehudi, which means

The Honourable Zamira Menuhin Benthall, daughter of legendary violinist Yehudi Menuhin and Nola Nicholas, has died peacefully at her home on 31 July at the age of 84. Her funeral will take place on 16 August in Pembury, Kent, UK.

Menuhin Benthall was born in 1939 and spent much of her life continuing her father’s work, serving as a governor and vice-president for the Yehudi Menuhin School for many years. Between 1960–1969 she was married to Chinese pianist Fou Ts’ong, with whom she had one child, Lin Siao Fou-Menuhin. She later married British anthropologist Jonathan Charles Mackenzie Benthall in 1975, with whom she had children William Jonathan Menuhin Benthall and Dominic Gabriel Menuhin Benthall. The latter has served as a governor at the Menuhin school since his mother’s retirement.

She m 1st 1960 (div 1969) the concert pianist Fou Ts'ong and had a son. She m 2nd 1975 Jonathan Charles Mackenzie b 1941 3rd s of Sir (Arthur) Paul BENTHALLKBE 1902-1992 sometime head of that gentry family of Benthalland Mary Lucy PRINGLE1905-88 scion of that gentry family of Whytbank, and had a further two sons.
