Daft Punk: A Retrospective
A love letter to “dafty punky thrash”.
Forming in 1993 and disbanding in 2021, Daft Punk gifted the world 4 studio albums, 2 live albums, a soundtrack album, and two films. The impact the robots have had on both music and the wider world is difficult to explain. The duo sold over 10 million records worldwide, yet I would hazard a guess that most people don’t know their names, let alone their faces. This anonymity has always been an intentional facet of Daft Punk, and it’s what makes them so important, both to me personally and to the world.
Daft Punk was Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (silver and gold helmets respectively). The two met at secondary school in Paris, where they started a band with Laurent Brancowitz (yes, that one), named Darlin’. Darlin’ themselves carved out a very important piece of history, through a review received from Melody Maker Magazine describing their music as a “daft punky thrash”. A Look Back on Daft Punk: History, Legacy, and Music
On February 22, 2021, the electro house band Daft Punk announced its disbandment after 28 years of being together. Many fans were devastated by this news; many grew up with Daft Punk always there. The group’s music – both beautiful and catchy – is something that arguably shaped a lot of the culture of the 2000s, and without the band we wouldn’t have a lot of current musicians in the same form that we do now.
Daft Punk’s legacy is an important one to both music and culture, so here’s a brief summary of the band’s story.
1987-1992: Darlin’
In 1987, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter met while attending the same school in Paris. Quickly they became friends and began recording music together with other students they knew around the school under the band name Darlin’. Although they only released one EP, which wasn’t well-received, the duo wanted to continue making music, but felt they wanted to focus more on an electronic sound.

Daft Punk
French electronic music duo (1993–2021)
Daft Punk were a French electronic music duo formed in 1993 in Paris by Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. They achieved early popularity in the late 1990s as part of the French house movement, combining elements of house music with funk, disco, techno, rock and synth-pop.[1] They are regarded as one of the most influential acts in dance music.[2]
Daft Punk formed after Bangalter and de Homem-Christo's indie rock band, Darlin', disbanded. Their debut album, Homework, was released by Virgin Records in 1997 to positive reviews, backed by the singles "Around the World" and "Da Funk".
From 1999, Daft Punk assumed robot personas for public appearances, with helmets, outfits and gloves to disguise their identities. They made few media appearances. They were managed from 1996 to 2008 by Pedro Winter, the head of Ed Banger Records. Daft Punk's second album, Discovery (2001), earned acclaim and further success, with the hit singles "One More Time", "Digital Love" and "Harder, Better, Faster, S
