Premiere of Sophocles' "König Ödipus" (new translation by Helmut Schäfer) in the Stadthalle Mülheim. This premiere opens the festival month of November on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Theater an der Ruhr. Gralf-Edzard Habben has installed an exhibition in the foyer of the Stadthalle that reflects the performances of the last 10 years.

The "Initiativkreis Ruhrgebiet" supports the international festival "Theater für Europa - Entdeckungen" , to which the Theater an der Ruhr has invited two productions from the Slovenian Theater Maribor, Goethe's "Faust I and "Faust II" as well as Shakespeare's "Hamlet" and Genet's "Die Zofen" from the Moscow Satirikon Theater. The performances are very well received by the audience and the press.

The Art Porter Jazz Quartet from Chicago gives several concerts at the Theater im Raffelbergpark with great success.

The first European Theater Seminar is supported by the Ministry of Culture of North Rhine-Westphalia. Under the direction of Helmut Schäfer, the seminar brings together an international group of theater people,

Reverential yarn, with a wonderful John Barry musical score, that has been rendered completely inaccurate by the actual discovery and scientific investigation of the Titanic wreck.

This adaptation of Clive Cussler’s Cold War novel is about a project to raise the ill-fated liner in order to find a cargo hold full of byzanium, a radioactive mineral energy source that can be used to power ‘The Sicilian Project’, a missile defense shield around the United States.

The Titanic is raised in a spectacular scene and towed into New York Harbor accompanied by a parade of tall ships after the holes in her hull are patched, the hull is filled with foam, buoyant tanks are attached to her sides and inflated and explosive charges shake the ship loose from the silt. In so doing, three men are killed when the submersible ‘Starfish’ springs a leak and implodes and Dr. Gene Seagram (David Selby) and three other men barely escape death after their submersible ‘Deep Quest’ becomes lodged in a skylight.
