Akiyoshi (Shokei) Matsui started Kyokushin Karate at age 13. In 1976, he joined the Kita Nagare-Yama Dojo in Chiba prefecture and managed to achieve the first level of Black Belt in a little over one year. In 1980, he placed fourth in the 12th All Japan Open Karate Championships, when he was just 17. Soon after, he became Chief Instructor of the International Kyokushin Headquarters school ("Honbu" Dojo) located in Tokyo. Both in 1981 and 1982, he took 3rd Place in the All Japan Open Karate Championships and then 8th place at the same event in 1983. At the Third World Open Karate Tournament in 1984, he took a remarkable 3rd place and became famous worldwide for his amazing sprit, strength and determination. He succeeded in winning the All Japan Championships in the consecutive years of 1985 and 1986 and then successfully completed the ultimate Kyokushin challenge, the "100 Man Kumite" in record time. In Japan, he became known as a man of "unparalleled genius", someone who comes along but once in a n eon. In 1987, he became the youngest ever, Champion of the World.

It was with much sadness that in late April of 1994, the Kyokushin family across the globe learnt that its founder Sosai Masutatsu Oyama had died in a Tokyo hospital. He is missed by not only the masses who have followed in his footsteps but by the martial arts community as well.

His successor. Kancho Shokei Matsui Eighth Dan was named by Sosai himself to carry on the task of building and preserving the name of Kyokushin.

Kancho Matsui was born in 1963, and commenced his illustrious karate career at the age of 13. He quickly established a firm reputation for being a karate man of exceptional skill and ability, with a highly individual, technically superior style of fighting. He took the basics he learnt in the dojo, and through intense and dedicated training, he made these techniques work for him. Students around the world continue

Shokei Matsui (松井 章奎, Matsui Shokei (Akiyoshi), born January 15, 1963),[1][2] also known by his Korean name of Moon Jang-gyu (Korean: 문장규; Hanja: 文章圭),[3] is a South Korean martial artist in Japan. He is the master of Kyokushin karate and current Kancho (Director) of the International Karate Organization Kyokushin-kaikan, faction of the International Karate Organization (IKO) founded by Mas Oyama (1923–1994).[1][4]

Early life

Matsui was born in 1963 and started training in Kyokushin karate at age 13.[2] In 1976, he joined the Kita Nagare-Yama Dojo in Chiba Prefecture and attained the rank of 1st danblack belt in a little over one year.[4]

Later years

Matsui completed the 100-man kumite in 1987, when ranked 4th dan.[5] In May 1992, Matsui opened his own dojo in Asakusa, Tokyo,[1][4] and was later appointed as a Branch Chief by Oyama.[4]
