Ernesto Artillo (Málaga, 1987) is a multidisciplinary designer and artist based in Madrid. He has held solo and group exhibitions in Saint Petersburg, Mumbai, Korea, Beijing and Hong Kong and in cities such as Mallorca, Valencia, Madrid, Barcelona, ??Seville and Malaga within Spain. She has directed the art, costumes and stage design of productions such as La mujer en obras by Javier Ballesteros, Human de Korsía and the opera Aria di Potenza by the Airport Society and several collaborations with La Monnaie, Brussels opera. The Malaga artist Ernesto Artillo opens at Río & Meñaka Madrid "Los mártires", his largest solo exhibition to date, where he shows a selection of his latest works that vindicate the human and the possibilities of being and being through the most primary.

"Los mártires" are fragments of naked intentions. They are those who leave where they are expected to be, those who put their faith before their security, those who suffer in defence of their intuitions. Martyrs do not ask questions so as not to contemplate other options, nor do they answer so as not to violate those of others. Martyrs talk about something different from what is being talked about without losing the thread of any conversation. Martyrs accept applause without trusting those who applaud. Martyrs are the anti-capitalist postures of bodies, the most extreme elasticity of skins, the poems about anarchy swallowed by mouths. Martyrs are those who assume that one can only live suffering in order not to die lying.

Fashion and art have been engaged in a veritable waltz of interaction since before the two were clearly categorised. The craftsmanship of couture is often so singular, so extraordinarily intricate and unique, that it would be churlish to deny it the status of art; while artists – such as in the Dress/Art project commissioned for AnOther Magazine S/S07 – have collaborated with designers to create wearable garments that now hang in museums. They are two creative worlds that engage in a potent osmosis, but it is most common to see the work of artists referenced in catwalk collections, rather than the other way around.
