Walid Juffali

Walid Ahmed Juffali (1954/55 - 20 July 2016) was a Saudi billionaire heir and businessman. He was the chairman of E. A. Juffali and Brothers, one of Saudi Arabia's largest companies. His July 2016 divorce settlement of £75 million, shortly before his death from cancer, was the largest such settlement in English legal history.

Early life and education

Juffali was the son of Ahmed Abdullah Juffali (1924–1994), the founder of E. A. Juffali and Brothers, one of Saudi Arabia's largest companies. His younger brother is Khaled Juffali, and his sister is Maha Juffali. His brother Tarek Juffali died in 2006 from a drug overdose, and had been "a heavy heroin and cocaine user and also took Rohypnol and smoked 30 cannabis joints a day".

He received a bachelor's degree from the University of San Diego, California in 1977. In 2012, he received a doctorate in neuroscience from Imperial College London. H

Saudi-born Dr Walid Juffali was born into one of the wealthiest business families in Saudi Arabia.

He was educated at Le Rosey in Switzerland, the US – at the University of San Diego – and then, after settling in London, he received a doctorate in neuroscience at Imperial College, London

From 2005, Juffali was chairman of his family’s company, E.A. Juffali Brothers, one of the largest companies in Saudi Arabia for telecommunications, infrastructure and insurance. Juffali’s personal fortune was considered to be $8billion. 

He furnished his lavish properties in the UK, US, Saudi Arabia and Switzerland with works by some of the most celebrated names in the art world, including Picasso, Chagall, Miro, Calder, Kapoor and Fernando Botero.

He was married three times, firstly to Basma al-Sulaiman. The couple lived with their three children in Jeddah where they would invite guests such as Margaret Thatcher and President George Bush.
